music = architecture
non-crystalizing envelope condition
activated by audio frequency range.

This project is tied to reality, as reality is the reference for architectural form; however, it is removed from reality, this is a digital and theoretical construct. The design is based on a real world structure, it is a representation of a real place. This limitation provides the geometry for reference. The architectural concept is parametrically customized for this specific frame work.

The algorithmic definition produces a shifting envelope condition. That condition transforms in real time according to audio input in the form of an mp3. It is important to emphasize that it is purely the architectural condition that is altered. The music affects sunlight and air via the roof. The concept is latched, simply and literally to the provided architectural frame work. The ‘empty’, or ‘silent’ state of the model is a plain flat roof consisting of 2 rectangles, then with music, it is given life.

1 link to sound
The definition is based on the wavelength of an mp3 file. Any sound will do. More complex pieces are clearly so when seen in contrast with simpler compositions. There are options for the work flow ’live preview’ and for animation, a ‘scrub’ function. These can be switched between by connecting to the first peak levels tab. The levels are amplified here before going out for the motion registration. The mp3 is translated into one (changing) number.

2 controller
All the main sliders are together. From here the most important function is one of assigning scale, both to the form itself and to the amplitudes. The pre amp should be adjusted with each new track, volumes vary widely. Try to identify the highest peak (lowest being 0) and make it equal 1000 as closely as possible. This will set up the internal range.

3 one line
This line is drawn by the operator. It is the origin for all the subsequent geometry,
and the hinge for symetrical movement. It becomes the core of the spine.

4 motion
The input sound is parsed into 16 compartments, 4 for each bay. they are arranged in a regular linear pattern along the length. The points are reactive from low to high peaks along the building. As the peaks rise, (generally indicating rising intensity within the song) the roof butterflies open. Each track is internally referenced for ranges.

5 new reference geometry
After the original line has been translated into a series of animated points,
those points are grouped and made into new lines,

6 1/2 roof
the offset geometries are turned into surfaces.

7 structure
The frame is traced and referenced for a series of pivoting trusses.
